“A combined attack against lung cancer has started at the European Institute of Oncology: a revolutionary examination based on circulating micro-RNA and low dose CT scan for early diagnosis of lung cancer. It represents the beginning of a new era in the diagnosis of lung cancer."
The Cosmos II has been launched following the promising results of the first IEO’s sponsored trial Cosmos (Continuous Observation of SMOking Subjects), to improve early diagnosis of lung cancer considered today as the most important life-saving tool. This is a multicenter Italian study, coordinated by IEO created to identify an optimal personalized protocol for early diagnosis in people subject to high risk of lung cancer (heavy smokers).
Starting from next 15th of July 10,000 heavy smokers or former smokers will be recruited throughout Italy (other clinical center are participating to the study: Florence, Rome, Pescara, L'Aquila and Palermo). The volunteers will be subjected to low-dose CT scan and blood test for the detection of biological markers of disease (microRNAs, miRNAs).
